It was great to see so many people at the Meet the Teacher’s evening a few weeks ago. For those who couldn’t make it that night, I will repeat this story.
A man was walking along the beach. Far in the distance, he could see a stretch of beach where hundreds of starfish had washed up on the beach. As he got closer he could see a young boy picking up the starfish, one by one, and throwing them back into the ocean.
He stood and watched. He felt the futility of the boys’ actions – there were so many starfish and only one boy trying to save them. He shook his head with frustration and walked closer to the boy and the hundreds of starfish. He again watched and, finally, when he couldn’t watch any longer he walked over to the boy and said, “Why are you doing that? There are hundreds of starfish and only one of you, what you are doing is impossible, you will never save them all and besides – what difference does it really make?”
The boy looked at the man as he picked up one starfish, threw it back into the ocean and replied, “It made a difference to that one!”
It is easy in a big school to think that children can get overlooked but everyone here at Churton Park School works to make a difference for each individual student. There is not just one of us, like the little boy, but a team of us…and the other important part of the story is that, unlike that man who stood and looked, we want you to work with us to help children celebrate their progress and achievement.
We are committed to making a difference.

Anne Tolley about how National Standards will help your child at 10.00am on Tuesday 9th March at the Office of Katrina Shanks, 2 Broderick Road, Johnsonville. RSVP by 1st March to 461-7193 or to katrinashanks.mp@parliament.govt.nz . For your information, this year in relation to National Standards, Churton Park School will be
- Reviewing the current report form and ensuring that it includes achievement relative to National Standards and what parents can do at home to support their child’s learning
- Reviewing our assessment schedule to ensure it provides the data we need
- Providing two written reports which will identify your child as Above, At, Below or Well Below in relation to their year group standard
- Reviewing our reporting schedule to our parents so that we meet the new National Standard requirements
- Sharing the process with you, our school community
ROAD PATROL :
Many thanks to the parents who have volunteered to assist with Road Patrol supervision again this year. We urgently require a parent to monitor the Halswater Drive patrol on Monday afternoon. Patrollers are not permitted to carry out their duties without an adult present.
We also need 3 more volunteers for the Churton Drive crossing – Monday, Thursday and Friday.
Time required for both crossings: 2.55 – 3.15. If anyone is able to help out could they please let Di Patchett know as soon as possible.
ROAD SAFETY:
A reminder please to park legally when dropping off or picking up students from school.
Driving and pedestrian behaviours observed over these past two weeks which do not help our patrollers include:
- Not observing the 5 minute zone directly outside the school.
- Stopping in the middle of the road to drop off or pick up children
- Parking on the yellow lines – this restricts the view for the road patrollers.
- Making three point turns into driveways within 500 metres of the school. Children walking along the street are not seen. It also causes a build up of traffic and confusion.
- Parking across residents driveways.
- Crossing the road within10 metres of the patrolled crossing.
We appreciate it takes a little longer to use a patrolled crossing or park further from the school than preferred. However we ask for your patience. The patrollers have chosen to undertake this very responsible job and it is important that we show our respect for the job they are doing.
SCOOTERS AND BIKES:
Students are asked to push their bikes and scooters between Halswater Drive and the top of the drive at the front entrance of the school to ensure safety of pedestrians. This includes riding up and down the driveway. Parents please remind your children of this requirement.
For security reasons the Bike rack has been placed behind Room 19. Extra security is provided if students are prepared to chain their bike to the rack as well.
