Principal’s Corner

- tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa.

Three celebrities, who were voted the most trusted by the NZ public, were interviewed on the radio last year and asked what they would do if they won Big Wednesday.

It made me think about who were my most valued teachers – can you recall the names of teachers who really impacted your life? I can name two or three who really made me feel successful, happy and valued in their classrooms. In many ways the effect of those teachers on my life would be similar to winning Big Wednesday because they made me believe in myself and achieve beyond what I thought.

Teaching is about creating the conditions for all students to realize their potential.

“The dream begins,” said Dan Rather, “with a teacher who believes in you.”

All of the teachers here are working hard to help students fulfil their dreams and the celebration of successes in this weeks’ newsletter reflect that. I know it’s a big temptation to stay home in the warm but your attendance in the cold and the dark also supports that as right on cue, the rain, wind – even some hail – as we start the afternoon and evening of Three Way Conferences. Thank you to all our brave parents!

And the most trusted NZ celebrities were Irene van Dyke, Alison Holst and Tim Shadbolt – any surprises there for you?

Anne

P.S. Thank you also to those parents who popped in, introduced themselves and gave me some feedback on the report forms – I really appreciated it.

Welcome to the Churton Park School family

A Scholarship for Samuel Marsden Collegiate School

About one month ago, I entered an exam for a Scholarship Award for Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Karori. The exam included maths, English and general knowledge and altogether took two hours.

One week later, a phone call confirmed I had an interview with Ms Williams who is the Principal. The interview contained six main questions and further questions confirming the answers.

Last Thursday Ms Williams rang and told me I had gained the scholarship.

Congratulations Alexandra on this wonderful achievement.

Salty

The rod started dancing in front of my eyes as if it had a life of its own. A flickering red light was rising from the icy depths, thrashing wildly. Reels were screaming. As I landed the struggling beast onto the deck a blanket of silence fell over the boat. Bright red scales reflecting the early dawn light. Its bright blue fins were flailing as we held it up to measure.

My first fish of the day!

Ben Murdoch won this fishing rod, provided at the Hiwi the Kiwi Show last term, for the best fishing story.

Amazing Room 4

Last Term Room 4 enjoyed learning new skills in gymnastics. This is our acrostic poem on our thoughts and feelings about gymnastics:

Great way to get you fit

Yoyo movements

Makes you feel happy

Need to listen to instructions

Awesome Wendy

Super duper skills

Tiring

I love it

Cool tramp

So fun!

A big thank you to Wendy for helping us with gymnastics!

Descriptive writing by Ashlee

Danielle, my baby sister, has a twinkle in her eyes and she always wears nice clothes. She is easy to get to sleep but hard to get awake. She occasionally opens her eyes and she’s got blue eyes. She has beautiful skin. You have to be careful when you hold her and when her hands open you can put one finger in her hand and she squeezes it very lightly. She likes to play with her hands and she likes to put her hands in the air. You can stroke her with your knuckle on her cheek.

Civil Defence – School Evacuation Practice Day – Friday 13th August 2010

Civil Defence logo

On the Evacuation Day morning all children, in House Group teams, will rotate around a variety of activities related to emergency preparedness. In the afternoon, we will be testing our emergency systems with a school wide alarm and a whole school evacuation. All children will need to be collected by parents or nominated responsible adult from the hall from 2pm. Children will be assembled in the school hall, in their class groups, except that younger children will be in their older sibling’s class line. New Entrants from Room 12 without older siblings will wait in Room 20 and will be released from there.

To reduce waiting times, we are asking that parents with children in

  • J Block (Rooms 1,2,3,4) and the New Entrant Block (Rooms 11,12,13,20) arrive at 2pm to collect their children (this will include their older siblings)and that
  • M and S Block parents/caregivers arrive nearer to 2.30. Those children who are booked in for regular Friday After School Care will be released into Charmaine’s care at the end of the exercise.
  • More detailed information on the system for the collection of children will be available on a board at the entrance to the hall. When children have been released, please collect their belongings from their classrooms and leave the school grounds.

As part of this evacuation process we need to ensure that we are prepared at school. Therefore we are asking each child to provide a can of food (e.g. baked beans, spaghetti, soup or fruit) and $2 to buy water and rubbish bags for our emergency supplies. Please return these items to the classroom teacher as soon as possible.

A booklet will be given to families as they leave the hall. This contains information on how you can prepare your family for an emergency by making plans and collecting supplies. If children help to create a plan, they will be more likely to remember it when the time comes and are also able to face an emergency situation in a calmer, more capable manner.
