Principal’s Corner

Welcome back to Term 3. It is always such a pleasure seeing all those smiling faces returning to school after a holiday break because I think it is one of the (many) school days when everyone is really pleased to be back at school.

This Friday students will be bringing home their first written report this year. It is set out quite differently to reports you have received in the past and it is our first attempt at incorporating information as required by National Standards. We have clearly identified what your child can do, what their next steps in learning are and also some activities you can do, as parents at home, to support your child’s learning in the three key areas of maths, writing and reading.

We have also clearly identified what the end of year expectation is in relation to your child’s achievement and indicated where your child is achieving presently in relation to this expectation. It is important to note that this is an end of school year expectation for our year 4, 5 and 6 students.

For our younger children, this is a bit more problematic as, in the future, there is a new requirement to report at the end of your child’s first year at school (after 40 school weeks), end of their second year at school (80 school weeks) or end of their third year at school (120 school weeks). This will mean that, from 2011, the reporting schedule across the year for our junior students will be quite different and this is something we will work through with you later in the year. In the meantime, this report gives you an indication of your child’s progress in relation to their year group expectation. Teachers will explain this a bit more when you attend the conferences next week.

Please remember that all children learn at different rates and it is very important to celebrate both the progress your child has made, as well as their achievements. Self esteem is imperative for children to be successful and so it will be very worthwhile to view this report with the intention of celebrating the progress that has been made, while setting targets for future achievement.

Following the conferences next week, we will be seeking formal feedback from some parents with regard to this new progress report form but if you get the chance, while you are attending the conference, please pop in and let me know your thoughts.

Thank you for all the enquiries already about making a time for meeting with the class teacher – we are delighted at your enthusiasm. Instructions for making your booking are included in this newsletter.

We look forward to sharing with you next week.

Anne

As classes will finish at 2pm, please ensure you return the enclosed form so that we know which students are being collected and which students will be staying, supervised at school, until 3pm. This is very important as we want to ensure the safety of every one of our students.

School Value

The school value this term is “HONESTY AND TRUTHFULNESS” – a willingness not to steal, cheat lie or be unfair.

Check the school website for activities you can do to promote this value.

School Donations

Thank you to all those that have paid their school donations so far this year.

Donations are very important to our school because they enable us to provide a wider range of activities than are covered by state funding. As a decile 10 school we receive less government funding per child than lower decile schools. Your donations enable the board and staff to deliver the curriculum to a high standard. Donations are used to purchase reading and maths materials, computers and ICT equipment, sports equipment, and resources to enable students to carry out inquiry learning. Donations are voluntary, but we greatly appreciate all funds received.

Extra donation forms and details for internet banking are available from the school office, or can be downloaded from our website.
