What a delight it is to be at Churton Park School. Everywhere I have been, people I have spoken to have said what a wonderful school Churton Park is and, after only two days back into the term, I can see why! Everyone has been very welcoming and I have been impressed already by the commitment of all the staff, the courtesy and warmth the children have extended to me and the welcome I have had from our school community.

I would like to particularly acknowledge and thank Di Patchett who has done a superb job in the past 6 months as Acting Principal and who has been so supportive. It is a real reflection on the great staff here that they have worked so well together during the transition time and have helped both Di and I, which we both appreciate.

A special welcome to Mr Hayden Thompson who is sharing with me the feeling of being new and who is teaching in Room 17. There are also a number of new families who have joined the Churton Park family so a special welcome to them and theirchildren also.

I hope all of you have been able to have some relaxed family time during the break and are looking forward to 2010 with us.

I look forward to meeting you at the Meet the Teacher evening next week.

I am so glad to be here!

Road Safety:

Our road safety patrol children have received training from the Ministry of Transport. It is a very important task that these Year 6 children carry out, but one that they accept and carry out very responsibly.

We can support our road patrollers in many ways:

Road Patrol Supervision:

Thank you very much to those parents who have kindly volunteered to help at the Halswater Drive or Churton Drive crossing in the afternoons. This help has meant an easy start at the beginning of the year and provided great support for our new Patrollers. Help is still required however. Parents are asked to assist on the afternoons of Tuesday and Friday at Churton Drive.

Time commitment: Churton Drive 2.45 – 3.15pm. Halswater Drive morning: 8.30am – 9.00am. Please contact Di Patchett on 4784282 if you are able to assist in any way.

Cornerstone Value:

Our school value for this term is ‘Responsibility” a willingness to be answerable, to be trustworthy and accountable for your own conduct and behaviour.

Students will discuss what responsibility looks, sounds and feels like. They will also share ideas about why responsibility is important, who we should be responsible to, what are the consequences for not being responsible and how responsibility can be applied to classroom, school, sports teams, home and friends.

School Lunches:

School lunches will commence on Wednesday 10 February 2010.

H&SA Family Picnic and Fun Night:

A fun evening for families and staff will be held on Friday 26 February at school from 5-7pm. This has been organised by the Home & School Association with the help of a “Push Play” trailer full of fun and games for ALL the family, and Caffe L’Affare who have kindly donated coffee. Bring along all the family and a picnic tea/takeaways (or there will be a sausage sizzle to purchase from) for a fun evening, and a great chance to meet and catch up with people in

your school community. Mark this date on your calendar and let’s hope for a beautiful fine evening!

Connecting with Cheboche Village, Nepal:

Last year, the students in Room 6 undertook a special project which involved designing and producing a new teaching/learning resource for the children of Cheboche Village School in Nepal. Cheboche Village is situated in the Mt Everest region of Nepal.

The Room 6 students researched key aspects of the children’s lives in the village. Then each student designed and produced a brightly coloured, hardboard plaque, representing a letter of the English alphabet with an image from the Sherpa culture that these children could relate to.

Room 6 also kindly donated the $270.00 they raised from their Small Businesses Project to the village children. This was spent on educational posters for the classroom walls as well as table tennis and badminton sets.

The alphabet board idea came about as a result of the need for English text resources. The school has been able to pay for an English teacher for the past 7 years to help them learn English which enables the young people from the village to have greater employment opportunity.

The Cheboche Village Committee and the families of Cheboche Village have expressed their thanks for the time given to making the resources and the generous donation

Last year’s students are very welcome to visit Room 6 this Term to see more photos of the village children with the A – Z plaques.
