RATIONALE:
The school undertakes to provide an appropriate level of care and treatment for children that are involved in accidents at school.
PURPOSES:
- To promote parent awareness of the procedures that have been followed in the treatment of their children after accidents at school.
- To provide broad guidelines for staff in the treatment of accidents and injuries that occur at school.
GUIDELINES:
Pupil’s condition to be assessed by the duty teacher and a senior staff member. Medical records are to be checked and the following procedures implemented:
a) Treat minor injuries - cuts, abrasions, etc., using normal hygienic precautions.
(See Appendix A: Standard Safety & Hygiene Procedures - attached).
b) If the teacher judges the accident to be serious enough the parents or caregivers will be contacted.
c) Contact parents if doctor’s or emergency treatment is required, or if unsure of the child’s condition, or if an injury to the head has occurred.
d) Contact alternative caregivers if names have been supplied and parents are not available or cannot be contacted.
e) Contact child’s doctor and arrange transport to same if parents/alternative caregivers are not able to be contacted. Parents meet the cost of this action.
- In an emergency, phone the ambulance - parents to meet any costs involved.
- Record action taken in the accident register.
OUTCOME:
All children involved in accidents at school are treated in a caring, safe and responsible manner.
