We use technology tools ("ICT") to increase a child's learning opportunities and to improve school operation
Purpose
To define requirements, intentions and unacceptable uses of ICT when:
It is provided by the school;
It is used on the school premises; or
You are representing the school.
To achieve safe learning environment and understand cyber risks.
Guidelines
Summary – ICT will be used productively, acceptably, and legally for the benefit of the Churton Park School Board, staff and students.
- Users are required to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
- Year 5 and 6 students and their parents will sign user agreements before gaining access the internet. [Appendix 1]

If staff are approved for provision of a laptop computer a “Laptop Agreement” must be signed before it is provided. [Appendix 2]
- Guidelines for online publishing of student images or work must be followed. [Appendix 3]
- ICT is an expensive resource. We must attempt to use it to its full capacity.
- Always seek ways to improve education outcomes through the use of ICT.
- Always seek ways to improve the administration and management of the school through the use of ICT. E.g. Time use, productivity, output quality, file and data management, analysis and communication.
- Provide professional training, and support, in the use of ICT for all staff.
- Protect against unauthorised access to local area network and internet resources with appropriate software. Logins are required for access. The principal is responsible for defining access levels and rights.
- Internet access shall be limited to educational purposes only.
- The school network must have firewall and virus protection. Access to inappropriate content must be carefully managed through an appropriate level of supervision.
- Users are encouraged to learn the skill of assessing the validity of information accessed.
- Daily backups will be done and kept offsite for : The Network Server and all networked computers, the MUSAC Library Programme and stand alone computers.
- Have an ICT Team, reporting to the principal, to provide ongoing management and administration of the ICT resources. They are the first point of contact for problem resolution.
- Solutions will be provided promptly to software, hardware and networking issues.
- Annually review the ICT plan, budget requirements and the effectiveness of ICT use.
- Respect the copyright on software, music, images, text, etc. All software used at Churton Park School must be licensed to Churton Park School and be registered on the MUSAC Library/Information Centre MUSAC system.
- All information on or created on the schools ICT hardware, software and systems remains the property of the school. The Board of trustees have the right to access and review all such information when they choose. The Principal or Board may instigate an audit of the schools ICT (including staff laptops) at any time to ensure compliance with this policy.
- Refer to the Occupational Safety and Health Policy for safe practice and compliance requirements.
- High ethical standards, self censorship and responsible use are expected from all ICT users. If you are unsure about acceptable use ask senior staff, the principal or the Board of Trustee’s for clarification. Including, but not limited to the following, you should not engage in any activity that:
- Uses another persons identity or attempts to deceive
- Uses school ICT resources for activities that they were not intended for
- affects the cyber safety of the school learning environment
- affects the ability of other staff to meet their obligations to the school
- is for personal gain
- involves use of chat rooms
- brings the school into disrepute
- causes harassment or offence to others
- incurs unreasonable or unapproved cost
- breaches NZ laws, or school policy, including involvement in illegal (objectionable) material
- overloads the school network restricting operation
- constitutes gambling or a trading activity
- hacks into or maliciously attacks systems, including deliberately introducing a virus.
- constitutes breaking any law or school policy
- is unacceptable as defined by the principal in reaction to ICT use. Such a situation will attract a warning from the principal, be reported to the Board and instigate a policy review.
- All breaches of this policy, or a user agreement or any other action deemed unacceptable by the school management MUST be reported to the Board for review and appropriate actions will be taken. Refer to discipline policy.
- The adjudicator of unacceptable use of school technology will be the Board of Trustees.
- Any illegal actions will be reported to law enforcement for further investigation.
- The Principal or Board may institute an audit of ICT capability (including staff laptops) at any time to ensure compliance with this policy.
Self Review
1. This policy will be reviewed in accordance with the Boards triennial programme of self review.
2. The Board process will involve consultation with senior management, school staff and the parent community.
3. The reviewed policy will be made available to members of the school community once ratified by the Board.
