RATIONALE:
The Curriculum at Churton Park School will be delivered in accordance with Ministry of Education objectives; National Education Guidelines and National Administration Guidelines, national syllabi and guidelines, and the Churton Park School Charter, policies and curriculum statements.
PURPOSE:
1. To identify a set of teaching and learning programmes consistent with our charter, policies and curriculum statements.
2. To put in place curriculum programmes through which stated purposes may be achieved.
3. To plan and evaluate the delivery of the programmes to students including identifying the resources required.
GUIDELINES:
1. Curriculum Statements will outline our philosophy, purposes and guidelines for each curriculum area.
2. Curriculum Statements will outline procedures for implementation, and ways of assessing pupil development and programme effectiveness.
3. Curriculum Statements will be further amplified by:
- Syndicates and Teachers’ Long Term Plans to cover essential learning areas and skills.
- Education of parents re curriculum programmes and initiatives when appropriate.
- Regular monitoring of children’s progress and achievement.
- Concise and clear recording of that information.
- Programmes and initiatives set in place to address learning needs identified from school wide testing.
4. Senior Management will be responsible for:
- Assisting teachers to plan learning programmes in their blocks.
- Preparing and evaluating programmes of work.
- Monitoring teacher planning in their block.
- Monitoring pupils’ progress and achievement in each block.
- Maintaining an ongoing programme of self review.
- Ensuring that curriculum programmes and their implementation are in line with the National Education Guidelines and National Administration Guidelines, national syllabi and school curriculum statements.
5. The staff as part of our School Development Programme will identify one or two curriculum areas for special focus each year, and as such will receive additional resources and staff development time. This development initiative may be undertaken as a whole school or in a syndicate. This should be budgeted for in November of the previous year.
6. By February each year, teachers will be allocated specific curriculum responsibilities which will involve working on a curriculum committee to:
- overview that curriculum throughout the school
- motivate and support other staff members in the teaching of that curriculum
- keep up to date with current curriculum developments
- communicate information about that curriculum to the staff
- update and maintain resources in that curriculum
- co-ordinate curriculum statement reviews
- attend external curriculum meetings related to that curriculum if and when necessary.
SELF REVIEW:
- This policy will be reviewed annually in accordance with the board’s triennial programme of self review.
- The Board of Trustees will survey the school’s interviewing committee, as well as newly employed staff who have been through the interview procedure, on the effectiveness of the policy guidelines. The review will be based on the survey findings.
- The reviewed policy will be made available to members of the school community once ratified by the board.
