RATIONALE:
Assessment and evaluation provides on-going information which is used to improve children’s learning and the quality of the learning programmes, for reporting children’s progress, and for providing information for whole school review.
PURPOSES:
1 To improve learning by:
a. identifying the knowledge and experiences which children bring to learning, planning and / or refining teaching and learning programmes and meeting individual or group needs.
b. monitoring children’s progress to evaluate what learning is taking place and whether any difficulties are being encountered.
c. providing feedback to children and encouraging children’s self assessment.
2 To provide information on children’s progress and levels of achievement for parents and other teachers when a child moves to the next stage (class, school) of learning.
3 To build an ongoing profile of a child’s achievement (knowledge, skills, attitudes) across the curriculum. This profile will become the basis for reporting.
4 To provide information for the evaluation and review of programmes throughout the school as part of the whole school review.
GUIDELINES:
1 Assessment and evaluation should be an integral part of the learning process.
2 Assessment and evaluation should be based on the specific learning outcomes: achievement objectives, knowledge, understandings, skills, processes and attitudes as set out in the national curriculum.
3 Assessment and evaluation should be ongoing, accurate and as objective as possible.
4 Assessment and evaluation may take many forms, with information from several contexts, and the use of a variety of methods according to the needs of the children and the nature of what is being assessed. These include: School Entry Assessment Progressive Achievement Tests, cumulative records observations,checklists, running record, self assessment pre and post testing, work samples, conferencing, discussions between teachers, discussions with parents,anecdotal records.
5 Effective assessment and evaluation needs to:
a. take into account varied learning styles and cultural expectations, especially for children whose first language is not English
- be appropriate for the knowledge, skill or attitude being assessed
- be appropriate to the age and development level of the child
- provide results that can be communicated clearly
- Churton Park School assessment and evaluation, including the green cumulative record card, will be completed for all children at times prescribed by the school wide assessment programme.
7 The school review cycle will include:
a. class reviews which will take place three times a year
b. block reviews which are completed in November
c. a school review which is completed by senior management in December
d. a school development review in which all staff participate, late in Term 3, to establish objectives (and budgets) for the following year.

9 The Board of Trustees will be given reports on levels of achievement in accordance with the principal’s reporting schedule.
SELF REVIEW
This policy will be reviewed in accordance with the Board’s triennial programme of self review.
The Board will survey the principal, staff and board members on the effectiveness of the policy guidelines, and the review will be based on the survey findings.
The reviewed policy will be made available to members of the school community once ratified by the Board.
